Tokushima Prefecture International Student Community Exchange Promotion Project: Discover the Tourism and Culture of Tokushima

2024/11/20

On November 9th, 2024, the International Office, Tokushima University, organized a fieldwork titled “Discover the Tourism and Culture of Tokushima”. This event was part of the Tokushima Prefecture International Student Community Exchange Promotion Project, which aims to foster stronger connections between international students, Japanese students, and local communities. Through activities like this, the project helps international students improve their Japanese language skills, deepen their understanding of Japanese culture, and supports their integration into the local community.

For this fieldwork, international students and Japanese students from Tokushima University, Shikoku University, and Tokushima  College of Technology visited Ainoyakata (Indigo House), the Naruto German House, Ryozenji Temple, and Gokurakuji Temple. Participants learned about the historical and cultural significance of these locations in English.

The fieldwork included hands-on indigo dyeing experiences at the Indigo House, a visit to the historical exhibits at the Naruto German House, and a walking pilgrimage experience from Ryozenji Temple to Gokurakuji Temple. Along the way, participants also viewed the site of the former Bando POW Camp, learning about cultural exchanges between nations during World War I.

Through this fieldwork, international students gained a deeper understanding of Tokushima’s unique history and culture. For Japanese students, the event provided an opportunity to deepen their understanding of their own culture through interactions with international students. For all participants, the day was a meaningful and enriching experience.

The International Office intends to continue promoting exchanges between international students, Japanese students, and local communities through this project, creating more opportunities for mutual understanding.
